Flu is a common sickness that almost everyone has had an experience with. Being viral in origin, it is a contagious disease that people want to get rid of as early as possible.

Flu makes a person sick for days to a week.  It causes extreme discomfort and some of its symptoms include fever, body aches, chilling, fatigue and dizziness.  Its unpleasant symptoms make people want to take fever and pain-relieving drugs like Ibuprofen and Paracetamol, but there are some who prefer to fight it out the natural way.

Here are some of the ways to treat flu naturally:

1.  Drink plenty of fluids

The very first thing that you should do at the onset of flu is to keep yourself hydrated.  Your cells need to be hydrated to be able to get the nutrients which can help them heal themselves. 

If you have fever, be sure to drink more than the normally required eight glasses per day.  This also helps to keep your body temperature down.  If you find the taste of water unpleasant at this time, you can drink fruit juices or herbal tea to keep you hydrated.  You should avoid black tea or coffee because these can cause dehydration.

2. Get some rest

Aside from its being contagious, flu can cause extreme fatigue and you should get some rest when you are infected with it.  By taking some time off from work or school, you are actually preventing the spreading of the disease in your school or office.  Your classmates or co-employees will thank you for staying at home while you are having flu.

3. Take plenty of Vitamin C

Your immune system is your best defense against viral infections.  You can boost your immune system by taking extra doses of vitamin C.  You don't have to worry about the excess vitamin C as it will just pass out from your body as waste.

4. Try herbal healing

Echinacea and goldenseal are herbs which are known to help the body fight the flu virus.  When your flu is associated with upset stomach, you can deal with it by boiling ginger and drinking the water as tea.  You can also minimize cough and itchy throat by eating marshmallow and slippery elm.

5. Take garlic pills or eat garlic cloves

Garlic is a known natural antibiotic and it is even processed into pills to fight off microorganisms that cause flu and other diseases.  The recommended dose of garlic pills for flu is two pills three times a day. If garlic pills are not available at the moment, you can eat garlic cloves.  It can help to weaken or kill the virus that caused your flu.
